Squirrel Control: Pecan Trees I have tried the various methods above to get rid of squirrels. Traps work but there is the disposal/relocation problem. The pole shields work well for bird feeders, however due to the various diameters of pecan trees it is difficult to get them on the tree just right. For bird feeders the squirrel away gives the seeds a bad taste for squirrels but does not bother birds. I have not used it myself but understand it works well. For pecan trees, the most successful method is shown at the right. You wrap 2"X4" welded wire around the trunk. Place insulators between the wire and the trunk (Approximately 2") and connect the wire to an electric fencer.
